Employee ESD training
As products become increasingly ESD-sensitive, production operators and coordinators must adapt to a highly demanding technical environment. Training your operators is strongly recommended to make sure they follow the correct procedures. The IEC standard also gives recommendations on training and on maintaining the knowledge of everyone working in an ESD-sensitive environment.
Eurostat is a certified training provider (registration number: 43390015239) and provides expert trainers supervised by the chair of the French TC 101 committee.
Training can be delivered in French or English. 3 levels of ESD training are available.
Why train your teams?
A requirement of the standard IEC 61340-5-1 requires initial and recurrent training for all personnel handling sensitive components, before any work in an EPA. The training plan must be documented and records kept.
Defects that often go unnoticed An electrostatic discharge can damage a component without destroying it. The latent defect passes end-of-line testing and shows up later, at your customer’s site.
Equipment used correctly Wrist straps, footwear, floors and ESD workstations only protect if they are worn, tested and used correctly. Training turns equipment into reflexes.
ESD training — Level 1
Participants
- Operators
- Production staff
- Supervisors
Objectives
- Understand why and how disturbances or defects caused by static electricity occur
- Become aware of the risks and stakes of not following prevention rules and instructions
Duration
≈ 3.5 hrs
Recommended duration
ESD training — Level 2
Participants
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Support staff or managers with a technical background
Objectives
- Ensure that rules are followed by yourself and your colleagues in an EPA
- Take part in preparing pre-audits and audits
- Know the methods and tools for carrying out ESD measurements
Duration
≈ 4.5 hrs
Recommended duration
ESD training — Level 3
Participants
- ESD coordinators
- ESD supervisors
- Internal trainers/auditors
Objectives
- Implement a comprehensive plan for preventing and controlling electrostatic hazards
- Propose areas for improvement and corrective or preventive actions
- Prepare internal audits with occasional support from third-party ESD experts
Duration
≈ 3 hrs
Recommended duration
Content can be tailored to each customer’s specific issues and constraints. After each session, every participant receives a personalised certificate.
Programme & process
Topics covered by level
- Electrostatic phenomena: charge generation by friction (triboelectric charging) and by induction
- Component sensitivity, catastrophic failures and latent defects
- The EPA (ESD protected area): boundaries, signage, access rules
- Personnel grounding: wrist straps, footwear, floors, garments
- Packaging, storage and handling of sensitive components
- Standards framework: IEC 61340-5-1 and its user guide IEC 61340-5-2
- Measurement methods and periodic equipment verification (levels 2 and 3)
- Building and managing an ESD control plan (level 3)
How your training project works
1 Needs analysis: profiles concerned, number of participants, your site’s activity and ESD maturity level.
2 Tailored proposal: choice of level(s), language (French or English) and content adapted to your products and processes.
3 Training session: led by our experts, with practical examples from your production environment.
4 Certificate: given to each participant, it feeds into the training records required by your ESD control plan.
The standard also requires recurrent training: the frequency of refresher sessions must be defined in your training plan.
